Debian 5.0 Codename “Lenny” Released

Setelah 22 bulan proses develop , tepat hari valentine 14 Februari lalu, versi 5.0 dari Debian Lenny yang menggunakan kernel 2.6.26 akhirnya dirilis. Lenny menyediakan berbagai macam support, seperti dukungan sepenuhnya terhadap webcam. Kernel ini juga memiliki fitur built-in memory tester, KVM ports dan banyak improvement yang lain. NTFS-3G driver yang memungkinkan untuk read-write partisi NTFS secara aman sekarang sudah menjadi bagian dari Debian.

Pada desktop, default window manager menggunakan GNOME 2.22.2, dengan dukungan fitur - fitur yang telah dipakai seperti sebelumnya, kecuali beberapa pacakages (nautilus, gnome-panel dan libgnome) yang digunakan pada 2.20. GNOME 2.22.2 juga mempunyai sebuah experimental WebKit support pada Debian dengan Epiphany-Webkit. Printer akan otomatis terkonfigurasi ketika tersambung, dan file ISO mempunyai dukungan lebih baik. Desktop lebih ringan yang bisa menjadi alternatif juga disediakan, Lightweight X11 Desktop Environment (LXDE) 0.3.2.1 dan XFCE 4.4.2 untuk mesin dengan spesifikasi rendah.

Versi server dari Debian 5.0 memiliki beberapa fitur seperti MySQL 5.0.51a, PostgrSQL 8.3.6, Apache 2.2.9, Samba 3.2.5 Horde 3.2 dan webmail IMP 4.2. Sedangkan Virtualization ditangani oleh libvirt virtual machine management (dengan dukungan untuk KVM, Xen 3.2.1, QEMU, KQEMU, sebuah graphical interface dengan tambahan beberapa tool) dan Xen 3.2.1.

Linux Mint 6 “Felicia” released!

Nah, akhirnya versi mint ini diluncurkan juga sudah ditunggu-tunggu loh..

Apa yang baru ya?? ya yang jelas ini adalah turunan dari ubuntu 8.10 yang diluncurkan beberapa minggu yang lalu, seperti biasa, ya mint ini dilengkapi aplikasi-aplikasi yang terdapat pada ubuntu 8.10, nah yang baru dalam peluncuran felicia ini adalah adanya “Universal Edition”, langsung aja baca sendiri ya :

The Universal Edition is a customized version of the Main Edition with the following differences:

• It comes as a liveDVD instead of a liveCD

Prado 3.1.3 Relased!

Ya sebenernya sudah lama releasenya, yaitu pada tanggal 3 November 2008, framework PHP yang satu ini sudah berumur 4tahun lho.. karirnya dimulai pada tahun 2004, tepatnya bulan agustus, prado ini waktu itu menjadi pemenang zend coding competition (kalo gak salah), sehingga dengan cepat menjadi framework yang populer, dengan banyak sekali kontributor.. nah ini beberapa release notesnya :

Netbeans 6.5 Released!!

Hehe, akhirnya final release-nya keluar juga sebelumnya juga ada posting mengenai netbeans 6.5 ini, cuma waktu itu masih versi milestone1.. waktu nulis postingan ini saya sedang donlot, jadi belum bisa cerita banyak, yang jelas dalam versi final release ini sudah menyertakan dukungan untuk PHP serta Glashfish v3 prelude.

Nah, angka donlot baru menunjukkan 17%, tunggu update-an-nya ya..

USB 3.0

Setelah lama sekali kita memakai USB 2.0, mungkin sebentar lagi kita akan bisa memakai USB 3.0 yang kecepatannya bisa menyamai kecepatan firewire dari APPLE yang mencapai 0.5 GBps, ya menurut sumber berita dalam waktu dekat ini, perusahaan MCCI Corp. dan Synopsis akan meluncurkan spesifikasi dan driver untuk linux dalam lisensi GPL.

Linux Mint 6 RC1 Released!!

Berdasarkan release announcement pada website resminya, tim developer dari linux mint sudah secara resmi mengeluarkan mint 6 RC1. mint versi 6 (codename: Felicia) ini adalah turunan dari distro ubuntu terbaru, Interpid Ibex (8.10) yang baru dirilis beberapa waktu yang lalu. Beberapa keistimewaan yang ditawarkan distro yang satu ini adalah paket yang lengkap ketika kita menjalankannya tanpa mengistall ini itu terlebih dahulu.., sebut saja codec untuk multimedia, baik musik ataupun video, plugin browser yang sudah lengkap (flash dll). kemudian banyak juga program-program yang memang dibuat khusus untuk distro ini, contohnya adalah mintinstall, mintupdate 3, mintupload 2, mintnanny, dll.

Mint 6 ini datang dengan berbagai perlengkapan terbaru, seperti Linux 2.6.27, Gnome 2.24 dan Xorg 7.4. bagi yang pengen mencoba, langsung aja donlot sampe tua, ini link-nya.

Nokia QT Editor

Nah, bagi pecinta coding, sekarang ada 1 IDE baru yang sebagian besar pluginnya didevelop oleh nokia, salah satu vendor telpon selular yang paling mendunia. IDE baru ini bernama QT Creator, tampilannya sangat bagus dan user friendly untuk digunakan, syntax yang secara default didukung adalah C++ dan QT.

Untuk dapat langsung mencoba IDE ini, silahkan langsung donlot aja disini, kemudian jangan lupa install library qt4 dan pendukungnya (misalkan binding untuk opengl, database, dll).

Sidux Review

“Sidux” adalah turunan terbaru dari distribusi linux berbasis Debian unstable codename “Sid”. Review terbaru, diharapkan Sidux menjadi suatu distro yang memuat fitur - fitur terbaru dari software open source untuk penggunaan dan penelitian yang lebih luas.

I have long suspected that a majority of Debian users actually use Sid. Despite its name, the “unstable” tree works fine on the desktop. , During my own decade of Debian use, when doing a fresh install, I inevitably try out stable or (when frozen) testing, since those are usually the only trees with installers. However, it’s never long before I read about some new application I’m dying to try… and it depends on newer versions of things. Then, it’s time to edit /etc/apt/sources.list and apt-get upgrade; apt-get dist-upgrade to sid once more.

I suspect it’s the same for most Debian users, and that there are a lot of Sid users out there. But there could be even more, if Sid were a little less… unstable.

So, am I saying there’s a downside to running Sid? Well, yes.

Ironisnya, Debian seringkali dikritik “slow release cycles“. Tetapi tidak sama hal-nya dengan Sid, rilis paket - paketnya sangat cepat. Biasanya, versi terbaru dari suatu paket dirilis serentak pada distribusi Linux yang lain. Ingin mencoba software dengan versi terbaru dari [masukkan distro yang anda suka:-)] sebelum diluncurkan??, Give Sid a Try :-P.
